Cirque Éloize wins Drama Desk Awards

Cirque Éloize received the Drama Desk Award for “Unique Theatrical Experience” for its show Cirkopolis. The company’s President and Artistic Director Jeannot Painchaud accepted the award at the ceremony which took place Sunday night at The Town Hall in New York City.

Touring since September 2012, Cirkopolis was presented this past December at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts and was praised by the public and critics alike. The New York Times wrote “There aren’t more beautiful [shows than Cirkopolis],” while the New York Post exclaimed “Extraordinary. There’s the circus, and then there’s Cirque Éloize. These guys are on a whole other level!” In the coming months, the show is scheduled to visit, among other places, Latin America, Australia and France.

The artistic direction of Cirkopolis is by Jeannot Painchaud. It is directed by Dave St-Pierre and Jeannot Painchaud. The scenography is by Robert Massicotte and Alexis Laurence. The music is by Stefan Boucher and lighting by Nicolas Descôteaux. Costumes are designed by Liz Vandal and acrobatic conception is by Krysztof Soroczynski. The Executive producer is Jonathan St-Onge.

Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics’ organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories. For more information about Drama Desk
